Integrating Tradition with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) : Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and Environmental Sustainability

Abstract

This research will evaluate Indian Knowledge Systems through the prism of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will highlight, in specific terms, the benefits of using traditional Indian practices to support sustainability including, for example, use of biodiversity, water conservation, agriculture, building design and ecological ethics. This paper addresses the need for greater academic and policy recognition of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and it questions the dominance of an Eurocentric method in global environmental governance. The paper is used to show how IKS can serve as a source of knowledge for producing economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable environments through various frameworks that have already been used to produce sustainable outcomes, including the ecological resilience of IKS, the ethical framework of IKS and the collective/community design of IKS. The first section reviews the importance of the environment when considering policies at the global or regional level in terms of how they may impact on the environment and provides an assessment of the rapport between the environment and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Many traditional Indian knowledge systems (IKS), which originate from the philosophical, cultural and ecological traditions of the Indian subcontinent, offer contrasting views to current approaches to describing and explaining the rapport between humans and the natural world. Compared to how the environment is often viewed as a resource to be purchased and used up, IKS focuses more on ecological balance and on coexisting within systems that promote moderation and reciprocity.

This study investigates the rapport between IKS and the environmentally sustainable development goals (SDGs) of United Nations, as well as how IKS may inform and shape contemporary environmental governance practices; and, how the ecological philosophies of India provide an alternative perspective to the European-based sustainability paradigms that often dominate current environmental discourse.

• How can IKS be used in today's environmental policy and practice?

• In what ways do IKS compared to current, dominant western environmental paradigms?

The IKS, SDGs and theoretical lens will be established as the conceptual framework for analyzing the SDGs through the prisms of political ecology, ecofeminism and decolonial theory. This study will present IKS as a distinct epistemological system, which challenges any of the assumptions that underpin the process of global environmental governance, rather than as an appendage from which to derive rhetorical support for sustainability. Decolonial theory will provide assistance in disrupting the western-centric dominance of knowledge systems in the definition of sustainability. The Political ecology will outline how the environment measures the SDGs work with it.

The SDGs Provide an internationally accepted framework for promoting development while protecting the environment. The environmental goals of the 2030 Agenda in relation to the SDGs focus on water, energy, consumption, climate change and biodiversity. These goals provide for equitable access to natural resources; long-term ecological integrity; and sustainable management of natural resources. The implementation of these goals typically utilizes centralized planning, technological solutions/manipulation, and market-based solutions, even though they are intended to be approached holistically. As such, there is an opportunity to explore how traditional Knowledge Systems (IKS) that have cultural, and community roots can augment contemporary sustainability strategies.

Ancient Indian texts present ethical principles regarding the management of the environment. Ancient Indian texts express the principles of non-violence (ahimsa), mutual dependence, and respect for the environment. The ethical framework for environmental management is based on the philosophy of ahimsa and the principle of cosmic order.

The Indigenous Knowledge Systems' (IKS) comprise environmentally sustainable methods of living and doing that existed before the current scientific understanding of ecology. They encompass a deep knowledge of ecology from water harvesting at the community level to organic farming, sacred groves to protect biodiversity, and the architecture of homes that respond to climate. These practices closely match with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for water (SDG 6), sustainable cities (SDG 11), reliable consumption (SDG 12), environment action (SDG 13), and biodiversity conservation (SDG 15).

One prominent example of this is Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS), which has revitalized the use of johads (traditional community-managed water harvesting structures) throughout Rajasthan. The johads restoration work has improved groundwater recharge, restored rivers, and regenerated landscapes.

Through community-led efforts, the johads have also provided access to water for thousands of people. Additionally, TBS's Zero Budget Natural Farming - ZBNF project in Andhra Pradesh demonstrates how conventional practices of farmers can upgrade soil health, ease input costs, and strengthen resilience to environment change.

Through traditions, communities in the Western Ghats and elsewhere maintain sacred groves (natural and cultural sites) to conserve biodiversity by upholding community norms that have developed over time without formal regulation.

THEMATIC CASE STUDIES

Water Conservation and Management (SDG 6)

Traditional systems such as stepwells, temple tanks, johads, and kunds illustrated decentralized water governance rooted in ecological knowledge and community participation.

Viable Agriculture and Soil Health (SDG 12 & SDG 15)

Practices such as Rishi-Krishi, organic fertilization, and indigenous seed preservation demonstrate sustainable production systems aligned with ecological balance.

Climate-Responsive Architecture (SDG 11 & SDG 13)

Architectural traditions such as Vastu-based planning, Hawa Mahal’s ventilation design, Chang Ghar stilt houses, and Kath-Khuni structures reveal adaptive, low-energy, climate-resilient design principles.

Ethical Environmentalism (SDG 13 & SDG 15)

The Chipko Movement exemplifies how cultural values and ecological ethics translate into environmental activism, particularly through the leadership of rural women.

POLICY IMPLICATIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION PATHWAYS

IKS can be integrated into contemporary governance through recognition in climate and biodiversity plans, legal protection of community stewardship, incorporation into urban planning, educational reforms under NEP 2020, targeted funding, and creation of digital knowledge repositories that respect community ownership.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS: IKS AND WESTERN ENVIRONMENTAL MODELS

IKS emphasizes community stewardship, moral responsibility, and cultural integration of ecological care. Western environmental approaches often rely on regulatory and market mechanisms. A synthesis of both can create a more comprehensive and context-sensitive sustainability model.

CONCLUSION

Indian Knowledge Systems offer time-tested, communal-rooted strategies for ecological sustainability. Viewed through decolonial, political ecological, and ecofeminist perspectives, IKS provides not only ecological solutions but also ethical and social frameworks for just and sustainable futures. Integrating IKS into contemporary policy is not merely cultural recognition but a necessary step toward holistic sustainability.
